Christie rated it it was hehshall Feb 05, I have always considered the radicals to be the closest analogue to the “alphabet” in English – it’s literally how you “spell” kanjiand while you might be able to, for instance, learn how to recognize words in English based on their general shape, you can’t really call yourself literate unless you are able to break the word or kanji down piece by piece, and understand how to put it back together.
This is like studying every Latin or Greek word which preceded the modern one to understand English– too much work and unnecessary as well. The mnemonics are, to the degree possible without making them difficult, based on the etymology. Asking “How do I learn Japanese? Was actually the first kanji book I owned.

To find a kanji, you look it up by the readings in the back. Become a Redditor and subscribe to one of thousands of communities. Due to the derivation from historical origins, there are often similar interpretations given to different elements of a given kanji, or “primitives” as Heisig labels them. I personally used it extensively for inspiration when kkanji my own stories, but in its own right it can be tremendously hensgall for remembering the kanji.
And that makes this book more special to me. This is text of such sort as dictionary-thesaurus-glossary-index so navigation in a user-friendly way the Kindle version could be much better, and more enriching. Because mnemonics don’t help you to learn the significance of the kanji natively, or within the context of actual vocabulary which is manji you SHOULD be doing – the best way to start learning kanji is to learn the radicals first, and then start learning multi-radical kanji, because if you don’t have the basic building blocks under your belt, you’re obviously never going to get very far.
